While stationed at McChord AFB,Washingtonin early 60's, we had a C124 take off from the base carrying the current most decorated Soldier, plus others. The aircraft experienced engine trouble and inverted on take off and crashed in the woods killing all on board.
They weren't much over two hundred feet in the airwhen it happened.

Any troops stationed at AC&W sites(Radar Sites) would know about what we called "Bubble Checks" aircraft would fly over low and fast over the top of our bubble (antenna) 195? when in Ger. one of the off duty controllers getting in his time in a T Bird started on the deck screamed up the mountain then decided to go over the top inverted, got vertigo instead of pushing to climb out and roll he pulled back it was all over in seconds not much left

Ralph, when you say remote area in Alaska your talking somewhere north of Fairbanks I take it. Me, I was there at Fairbanks and not quite so boring being TDY with SAC. I do remember the cold, while trying to work on one of our B-47s with three “Ground heaters” blowing warm air at us while a KC-97 parked in front of us was running up it’s engines. Believe me when I say those heaters don’t work so good. Now of course living in Ohio it don’t get quite so cold, it just stays colder longer than Fairbanks did or does.

I was stationed at Charleston AFB SC in 1955 at the engine shop. I was an A1c. I was at the flight engineers station and had an AB at the pilots seat controling the brakes. We were testing the new engine we had just put on the #2 spot. It was a C-121 super connie. For those that know the ac you pull up on a handle at the pilots seat and the brakes are set. If you push harder on one of the pedals than the other only one brake is set. I ran the engines up to 1000 RPM and the aircraft jumped the chocks on the right side and spun around catchin an aerostand that had been left by the nose of the aircraft between #2&3 engines and ate it . parts went flying in all directions striking several other aircraft in the area. Total damage was in excess of half million dollars. Board finding was the airman on the brakes was asleep as it was 3am and I was the ranking person so I was at fault for not checking the brakes myself. Letter of reprimand. Thankfully I did not have to be paying for the rest of my life, as an A1cs pay in 1955 was a little more than the poverty level. Interesting time in my life.

Well Guys us Alaska Vets only had snow and boredom to fight. We were remote, very remote. But our tour was suppose to be a year but I got extended. Lucky I did as if I hadn't I would have gone to Great Falls Montana, can't see that wouldn't be just like Alaska. But I ended up in the south and it took the rest of my enlistment to thaw out.

I remember a RB-36 from the 77th Reconnaissance Squadron crashed at Ellsworth AFB while coming in for landing, It was August 27th 1954. 27 officers and airmen were on this flight and only one survived. I remember attending the Memorial Service. It was a very sad day for the whole base

Somewhere late 1953, I had the noon to six shift at the Naha AFB Control tower.
A flight of 4 Marine F-84s (ThunderJets?) took off on r/w 36 headed back to Atsugi NAS.
The number 4 jet flamed out just off the end of the r/w and went straight in.
At the inquiry we learned that the depth of the East China Sea at that location was over 400 feet.

Pilot didn't get out. RIP
