I remember when I was going through Air Police training at Parks AFB Ca a B 52 crashed and they took our class to the site for security and we spent the day and they brought box lunches..when I was stationed in Japan working the stockade we would take the prisoners to the flight line to look for nuts and bolts that the F-86s lost..

Fortunately, I can't remember any Military acft accidents
at any base I was stationed, and only one during my 35 years at Akron-Canton, that was a mis-fueling and occured on take-off during a Thanksgiving afternoon [no fatalities]. I remember visiting a B-24 accident[ that was WWII era] with my dad a few days after a crash at Morgantown, WV airport. I could still smell the burnt flesh.

Harvey, Rod was stationed with me at Geiger Field in Spokane, WA. We went through Shepperd, Chanute and Geiger together. I was IEC electronics on the dog. Pilots used to say that this all-weather interceptor was best flown during the day, full sun with a temp at 65 degrees. Not to be flown at night or in the rain.

one of the wierdest accidents was a c-119 at sewart afb when the landing gear was retracted while the plane was parked outside the hanger. a limit switch detecting the strut being compressed was either "open" or "closed" (opposite of the way it should have been) and a maint guy flipped the gear switch. alot of damage!

One accident at Pinecastle AFB I saw involved my Sqdn commander. He landed a B-47 and when he popped the drag chute it slipstreamed and didn't open to slow the plane. He applied the brakes until they burn't out and finally ran off the end of the runway. When they hit the soft sand the forward landingear folded under. They blew the canopy and ran down the wing and were safe. The aircraft started to burn and the fire company arrived but one of the fire trucks got stuck in the sand and they had to abandon it. When the fire was out there was the tail section two wing tips and the chassis of the firetruck and that was all that was left.

To Phil M. and others: there is an interesting web site on the 509th Comp. Grp at this link.

My brother, Hugh Daley (LtCol-retired) flew with the 462nd Bomb Group ("Hellbirds") off Tinian at that time.

There used to be pictures of many of the crews and their a/c on the 20th Air Force Association site but I can't seem to find them anymore.

RE: A/C ACCIDENTS
First thing I learned in Tech School: If you did not do the work, DO NOT SIGN OFF in the LOG BOOK.
I was a electrician on F-86-D and T-33's. We had a F-86-D go down on a local flight and GUESS WHAT? The Crew Chief had asked me to Sign Off a RED X. The worst possible thing I could have done. As the Captain that wanted to fly this bird was waiting with the engine running, I looked at the last entry that showed a Bad Thermo Couple and one of our best guys had done the work but had forgotten to sign off. Based on my trust in this electrician, I signed off and ended up with having to go befor a accident board. All Brass up to full Bird. Talk about being scared and having heard about having to buy one of these things, I was really scared. Problem turned out to be nothing any one had done to cause the accident. During the exam of the wreckage they found a split in the Hot Air line right next to the forward warning Thermo Couple and this gave a false indication to the pilot to BAIL OUT IMMEDIATELY. The log book which the Capt. took with him on bail out had a statement: "ONE TAKE OFF, NO LANDING.
moral of this story only sign off what you did and don't trust any one else.
