One the worst accidents the 96th had was during an alert, a fully loaded B-47 with a nuke on board was selected to fly. It had a 33 bottle JATO rack mounted under the aft main fuel tank that had 21,000 Lbs of fuel in it. When the pilot hit the switch for the JATO to fire, one bottle ruptured and then burned through to the fuel. The Crew Chief was on board (No ejection seat), when the aircraft got airborn the pilot put it in a nose up attitude so the navigator could eject as his seat ejected down. All the aircrew got out except the crew chief.

I was involved in an accident when I was stationed at Kinross AFB in the U.P. of Michigan in 1953.Our Sq -the 438th which was in the ADC, went to Yuma AFB for gunnery practice. The planes we had at that time were F-89s and they fired 2.75 rockets. When they were on gunnary practice they carried 24 rockets -12 in each wing pod.My job as a weapons mechanic was to place a plug into the pod when they came back from firing the rockets. This plug was to ground any static electricity away from the rockets that were still in the pod. The plug that in put in did just the opposite and some of the rockets fired .I was right next to the pod and got a face and arm full of the rockets exhaust. Cause of accident was a faulty plug.I spent a few days in base hospital with 2nd degree burns on face and arm. This accident made the Northrup tech. magazine

Speaking of A/C accidents and blame. Just after I got out in 1955, my buddy sent me an accident report about a KC-97 that crashed near Ft. Myers. The # 2 engine tore loose ,and fell off. The crew bailed out , but the Radio Opr. was killled when he jumped. They found the engine and checking the Serial #, found out I was the Crew Chief of the crew that Built -Up the engine in Engine -Build -Up. I was scared they would call me back in about it. Turned out one of the blades on the Prop had a crack in it and 4 ' of it tore off, and
being out of balance ,tore the engine from the wing. The Prop Shop was to blame there. We had nothing to do with that, so we were in the clear.

i was joking (in poor taste) about freedom not being free.
today, all of the b-2's are assigned to the 13th bomb squadron (grim reapers) that was originally formed in 1917. the squadron is in the GROUP that dropped the atomic bombs on japan (think it is the 590th?) i served 14 months in the 13th in korea and japan(equipment then was the douglas b-26) , and although most of my old buddies are either dead or "unlocated" i do have an ex navigator friend that keeps abreast of the squadron and it's annual reunions. he sent me an article after the guam crash that i think i remember blamed the accident on moisture in the device? the story indicated that the device had "complete control" of the craft at the time of the accident. you are right and i suspect that a revision will be completed real soon that the pilot can quickly override the device.
i was an aircraft electrician and have a hard time imagining working on the modern war planes!!! life was alot simpler for us, wasn't it?
i do know of cases where airmen had to pay damages for jeeps, etc that they were found guilty of damaging..

No Gary, I don’t think that is what that saying means. If that were the case and they made you pay for an aircraft or aircraft part, I know a few guys who would still be serving in their 70s and 80s for a little “Accident” on one of our 47s.
Have you seen the photo of that B-2 that crashed on Guam? They blamed it on a pitot tube giving erroneous air speed on take off. I think the pilot should have known what air speed he had and not relied on the computer for take off. Then, never having worked on one of those beast I would know for sure.

is that the meaning of "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE? " i know better...
they told us aircraft ground crew that if we were responsible for a plane accident that the $$$ damages would be deducted from our pay. it would take a few month's pay to cover that, wouldn't it?
