Southern Maine

On July 8, 2010 Phil Pender, SAFBVA New England Squadrons Coordinator, held a Luncheon/Meeting with Maine Sampson Vets and their companions at Governor's Restaurant in South Portland for the purpose of forming a new local squadron. 

Gordon Kimball gave prayer and blessings prior to the start of the meeting. Phil opened the meeting with a discussion of the SAFBVA rules regarding local squadrons and of their importance to the Association and that these local meetings are not intended to replace the SAFBVA September annual reunion held at the Holiday Inn in Waterloo, NY and at the Museum at Sampson State Park.

Norm Morency, SAFBVA co-webmaster, (sampsonvets.com) gave a talk about the Web site and its features and of the very popular FIS flight and airman search program and of the people involved in the functioning of it.

All enjoyed the great companionship and fine food and agreed to meet again in September at this same location.

A second meeting was held on September 16, 2010 at Governors Restaurant in South Portland. At this meeting Phil spoke on the progress of the Sampson Veterans Cemetery and of the renaming of Route 96A, which runs past Sampson State Park, to Sampson Veterans Memorial Hwy. He also spoke of the History of Sampson Book Authored by Jerry Hopfengardner SAFBVA historian, he mentioned that he has some copies of the book for people who may want to purchase them. He then asked for a volunteer to act as the squadron commander. 

Larry Hanson (SAFBVA non-member) said he would act as a contact person, not as commander, to which Phil agreed. That evening Phil received an e-mail from Bob Sawyer saying that he was volunteering to be the Squadron Commander. This was only the second meeting of this group. and all is falling in place.  It was suggested that the next meeting be held at another restaurant so it was decided that on Oct. 14 a meeting would be held at Cole Farm Restaurant in Gray , Maine.  

All Veterans are invited to join Our Squadron.

Luncheon/Meeting held on Thursday November 10, 2011

Nate & Barbara, Roy & Mary, Bob & Marilyn and Gordon ventured out in the rain storm for the November get-together at Disanto’s. The accommodations were super and the lunch was delicious. Those present put their share for the brick on the table, others that have indicated that they were interested in participating in the purchase can contact Bob. It was decided that the brick should be engraved:

Parting words were " hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season and winter, and stay healthy" and asked that I extend the same to everyone.
